Course Description

"Where do you get your ideas?" This is probably the most common (and difficult) question posed to authors. Perhaps the more important issue is: "How do you turn ideas into a novel?"

In this 45-minute class, I will use examples from my own and fellow writers' work to look at ways we devise and plan novels, from the initial spark to the structured plot. And what about writers who don't plan - how do they do it?

This session is designed as a stand-alone, and for those who might like a brief introduction to my 6-week Start Your Novel course. There will be time for your questions - just don't ask where I get my ideas!
Hello, I'm Jo Furniss, a best-selling author of suspense novels and short stories, including The Last to Know and All the Little Children. I'm also a former BBC journalist. I have an MA in creative writing - which I studied online - and I've tutored on the internet and in person at the Arvon Foundation. In our relaxed and supportive environment, we'll embrace the blank page!

About Me

Hello! I'm a best-selling author of suspense novels and short stories, and a former BBC journalist. I have an MA in creative writing - which I studied entirely online - and I've tutored on the internet, as well as in person at the Arvon Foundation. I help writers start, complete and edit novels. In our relaxed and supportive environment, we will learn to love the blank page!

This was an extremely encouraging course for a new writer or a disorganised and uncertain writer like me. Jo gives options on methodology but adds the need for structure, mapping and process. In one hour I saw the way through my block. I will go for the longer course now
