Working in the capacity of a middle manager is always tricky and sometimes feeling very lonely. This course is designed to help managers overcome challenges and learn new strategies to apply in the workplace. We will use Action Learning Sets to help dive into challenges that are preventing the participants from achieving their goals.
For this course to be successful it is important the those on the course commit to attending each session, be willing to participate actively and be open to using active listening. In the Action Learning Sets, we will follow some specific protocols to help the group move the discussion and reflect on different ideas and options to approach each other's challenges.
In the first session, we will review the different components of an Action Learning Set and do some simple ice breakers to help the group get to know one another. Depending upon time and experience we may be able to go through a short Action Learning Set so that the group gets the feel of the technique.
In the subsequent sessions, we will engage in the Action Learning Set with participants sharing their challenges and collectively identifying ideas for a solution.
In the last session we will reflect on the process and perhaps the group will want to continue on with the process so then we can discuss future steps thereafter.

This course is self-contained - all you need to do is show up, have your camera and mic on and be ready to participate. After the session, you will have some new tools to apply in your workplace. You will be asked to prepare one problem of practice for the team of participants to address- this will be your only homework task.

Teacher Expertise Mara has over 25 years of experience in education and 20 years in leadership roles. Academically she holds a PhD in Urban Leadership, Masters in Education and a BA in Politics. Professionally she has lead teams of school leaders along with leading her own schools for over 15 years. Most recently she lead a teacher training programme in the UK and now is working with other non-profits with writing their school leader training modules.
In relation to this course- Mara has facilitated over 100 Action Learning Sets in the US and UK working across a variety of sectors. She is a believer in this process and uses it herself with a peer-peer network group in the UK.

About Me

Teaching is my life, my parents would say. In my young adult life I took great joy at creating explanations for things and sharing new knowledge with others. As I matured I learned that much of teaching is learning, listening and understanding others' perspectives and experiences and the combination of learning with my love for sharing knowledge helps define my approach in any course I teach.

I have been privileged with having a long and varied teaching career that includes teaching math, science, history, leadership and English to young students in Los Angeles for nearly 10 years in mostly low income, culturally diverse communities. In addition, I have served as a school head, director and school founder for 12 years and most recently was a program manager for teacher training in the UK where I shaped what teacher training can look like for the post 16 sector.

Choosing to teach online is a new venture for me and an opportunity for me to grow. I appreciate the in-person sessions and look forward to cultivating discussion and learner engagement. Also, I believe education should be about choice, and I love that here you choose what you want to study.

The subjects I will teach will be relevant to those wishing to improve their professional skills, whether it be working with others, ways of writing, or how to increase colleague engagement and enthusiasm. In addition, I hope to bring in some courses specifically for teachers and presenters around how to prepare lessons and how to increase student engagement and joy for learning. Lastly, I am interested in teaching about how to cope with remote learning and working as I have observed and at times struggled with these issues in the past and have found some useful strategies that have worked.

In my classes you will never be quiet for an entire session, nor have to listen to me lecturing - I am a believer in collaboration, discussion and facilitated learning. Problem-based, project-based learning is my approach in a school setting; here online we will have a version of it. At the end of each session, we will re-cap to make sure that you have left with a nugget of learning or provocation to go further along with some extra tools to be that value add.
