Esteemed Coach John Wooden would say: “Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” In order to achieve success with your team member, it is important to know the basics of coaching and ways to help your team members achieve their 'best.'


In this course we will go over the basics of coaching, fatal flaws to avoid as a coach and have the opportunity to practice the skills in a safe, supported classroom space. The coaching basics will come from a bespoke design founded from the principles of the OSKAR model and Michael Fullan's Results Coaching framework. Using this blended design, Mara the teacher has had a lot of success with her team members in the past and believes that the bespoke framework can help others in their coaching capacity.

What to expect
Lesson 1: We will do some ice breakers to get to know and build trust with the cohort. We will then go over each of the phases that take place in a successful coaching model and highlight where the fatal flaws occur.
Lesson 2: Time to practice- Mara will demonstrate a coaching session and then participants will partner off to try it. Afterwards, participants will be invited to try a session in the workplace and be ready to report back in Lesson 3.
Lesson 3: Time to practice and reflect- We will learn about the challenges around implementation and if time permits to have a final practice to help shore up one's confidence in coaching.

It is important for this course that participants have a quiet place to engage with the online discussion. Each session will be interactive and best for participants to have cameras and mics on. Between lessons 2 and 3 it would be helpful that participants have an opportunity to trial the coaching techniques learned.

By the end of the three sessions, participants will have the tools to coach their direct reports or others in their organisation.

Mara has over 25 years of experience in education and 20 years in leadership roles. Academically she holds a PhD in Urban Leadership, Masters in Education and a BA in Politics. Professionally she has lead teams of school leaders along with leading her own schools for over 15 years. Most recently she lead a teacher training programme in the UK and now is working with other non-profits with writing their school leader training modules.
Mara has coached over 1000 professionals in the US and UK over the years and is very proud of the success of her network and a believer in coaching as tool to bring out the best in everyone.

About Me

Teaching is my life, my parents would say. In my young adult life I took great joy at creating explanations for things and sharing new knowledge with others. As I matured I learned that much of teaching is learning, listening and understanding others' perspectives and experiences and the combination of learning with my love for sharing knowledge helps define my approach in any course I teach.

I have been privileged with having a long and varied teaching career that includes teaching math, science, history, leadership and English to young students in Los Angeles for nearly 10 years in mostly low income, culturally diverse communities. In addition, I have served as a school head, director and school founder for 12 years and most recently was a program manager for teacher training in the UK where I shaped what teacher training can look like for the post 16 sector.

Choosing to teach online is a new venture for me and an opportunity for me to grow. I appreciate the in-person sessions and look forward to cultivating discussion and learner engagement. Also, I believe education should be about choice, and I love that here you choose what you want to study.

The subjects I will teach will be relevant to those wishing to improve their professional skills, whether it be working with others, ways of writing, or how to increase colleague engagement and enthusiasm. In addition, I hope to bring in some courses specifically for teachers and presenters around how to prepare lessons and how to increase student engagement and joy for learning. Lastly, I am interested in teaching about how to cope with remote learning and working as I have observed and at times struggled with these issues in the past and have found some useful strategies that have worked.

In my classes you will never be quiet for an entire session, nor have to listen to me lecturing - I am a believer in collaboration, discussion and facilitated learning. Problem-based, project-based learning is my approach in a school setting; here online we will have a version of it. At the end of each session, we will re-cap to make sure that you have left with a nugget of learning or provocation to go further along with some extra tools to be that value add.
