In the Philosophy of Perception a position called Indirect Realism suggests our minds generate reality.... all be it accurately. This means we are hallucinating accurately all the time. I use an extension of the Time-lag argument, called the Time-spread argument, to show this makes a lot of sense. By the end you will have learnt a few philosophical techniques and standards and how to apply them. You will also have learnt about some of the major philosophical theories about perception and how the debate between them is still going on to this day. We will use several good thought experiments to help you understand the issues and tease out the important bits about them, so that you can decide which argument you favour. And then you can look at the potential consequences of this in terms of how strong your knowledge of the outside world is. Anyone can understand the basics of this and all students are welcome. However you must accept that you will be learning Western Philosophical techniques which are based on reason and science.
The style of this course is a seminar style where I talk for 20mins to introduce the subject and then pause to take questions or to discuss a thought experiment. We can then introduce new ideas based on that for 5 more minutes before pausing for discussion again. I can make this into a more lecturing style is all students agree this is what they would prefer.
I used to teach this course to first-year undergraduates during my PhD. My main subject was Philosophy of Mind and Imagination, but I taught this subject for several years while I was doing my PhD and it was one of my favourite seminars. I have also always had a broad interest in psychology and striving for self-understanding and my place in the world. This subject has some really fun thought experiments in it to help you get the idea.

Each Learned.Live teacher is awarded a 4 star review for every one of their courses we have approved, in line with our assessment. This is why some teachers will display more than one 4 star review from Learned.Live if they have had multiple courses rigorously assessed by our team. We would not approve a course application if we did not feel it warranted a default 4 star review. Teacher star ratings are an average of each of their courses star ratings and will become modified as more students review their course(s) over time
