Want to learn how to spot and understand the difference between a ‘good’ and an ‘excellent’ comprehension answer? Finally, you can LEARN what the teacher is REALLY looking for! Critical reading and comprehension are a central part of English exam testing and is 50% of the exam grade at GCSE. Well before then, your child will be learning the skills needed to be able to understand and comment on the text. This is a course designed for parents written by teachers (one is a parent too) - who shares your frustration when it comes to helping your child improve their comprehension and critical reading ability. Sign up for my course and find out what the teacher wants to see and what your child needs to do in reading tests! I will also show you how important and valuable it is to instil good questioning habits as part of your child’s reading journey into adulthood with a great strategy for your young ones to become 21st Century learners and thinkers. During this course: Demystify ‘teacher speak’ - what is an assessment objective, even? And why as a parent is it important to understand them from the outset. Simplify the features of a text so you can help your child get to the heart of the matter quickly. What is this text really trying to do? Teach your child to look for patterns and connections to understand the "BIG IDEA'. Understand why nuance is so important for critical reading if you want an A*. By the end of the session, you will have 'bite-size' questions and exercises that will help your child extend their reading capabilities and perform superbly in comprehension exams. Bring your questions and I will provide the answers. Ideal for parents who have children Yr 6 upwards.
I am a fully qualified educator and coach with extensive teaching experience in English Language and Literature as well as English for Academic Purposes. Notably, I have taught in the state, independent and international sector and taught students from all backgrounds and cultures. I have expertise in teaching English across the boards (AQA, EDXCEL, OCR, ISEB) As an examiner for AQA and IB, I have in-house subject knowledge of the assessment benchmarks that students need to demonstrate in Common Entrance, GCSE, and A level English exams. My degree in Communication, English, and Media, together with my PGCE (English) from King's College, London, has given me the flexibility and the breadth of subject knowledge in English Language, Literature and Media up to adult learner level. I am particularly interested in teaching students how to think about their learning and have come to learn that one size does not fit all.

About Me

I am a passionate educator who is curious about the ways that students learn. No child is the same and I believe it is up to us as teachers and parents to take a mindful and questioning approach in order to elicit meaningful answers from our children and students. Teaching students how to think, question, and engage in their learning is a lifelong skill. What are the perfect conditions for learning? How can students connect their learning to the society they live in? During the last 20 years, I have forged relationships with like-minded educators asking these very questions! Teaching our children to think critically is paramount if they are to extend their responses in exams. As an experienced English teacher, teaching in the UK and overseas, I have analyzed, scrutinised and synthesised the assessment objectives in English and now I can tell you what the teacher doesn't have time to tell you! In other words, teach your children how to question and think so they see the value and meaning in their learning, you will give them a gift for life.

Each Learned.Live teacher is awarded a 4 star review for every one of their courses we have approved, in line with our assessment. This is why some teachers will display more than one 4 star review from Learned.Live if they have had multiple courses rigorously assessed by our team. We would not approve a course application if we did not feel it warranted a default 4 star review. Teacher star ratings are an average of each of their courses star ratings and will become modified as more students review their course(s) over time.
